Letter from Mike Dunn, Racing Director (posted AUG  2010):

Hi Team,

Instead of having the (rescheduled from July) Ski Bees Lake Party on Saturday Aug 14th at Lake Wylie and the Racing Meeting/Cookout on at the Grigorian’s on Lake Norman on Sunday Aug 15th, we are going to combine them BOTH on Saturday, Aug 14th at Lake Wylie.  Let’s meet at 11:45 AM for lunch at the Dominic’s house at Lake Wylie (Waterfront with a big pool).

FOOD:
The racing team budget will provide something fairly healthy lunch (per Trisha and Craig) but still bring you covered dish to share for the main party starting at 2:00 PM.  BYOB for both.  Hence, please RSVP so I will know many lunches to buy.

I will send out an agenda of the meeting but the following is the plan for the afternoon.

11:45  Meet at the pool and have a beverage and relax.
Noon   Lunch (provided by the racing team budget) BYOB.
12:30   Racing Meeting by (or in) the pool.  You guys can be in the pool for the meeting if you wish.  I’ll be in the sun!  Meeting should last around 45 min or so.
2:00  Ski Bees party starts (see the details below)
3:00ish cooking starts
5:00ish party ends.

NOTES:
1.       Thanks so much for Jon, Jill and Jake Grigorian for offering their spectacular home to us again this year.  Just seemed a little crazy for one club to have two lake parties in one weekend.
2.       Trisha and Craig have done an OUTSTANDING JOB in transforming our club to the new modern era since they have been on the Ski Bee Board of Director!!!! You will see many positive changes many of us have been “taking” about for years taking place in the next few months.  Including changing the name of the club for starters!
3.       Going to wait until we decide on a new name and logo before we make the new racing shirts.  Thinking we are going to use new “tennis shirt” material (not cotton) for our shirts so we can use them as a base layer under our ski wear.  We’ve contracted with a company to help us with our branding.  And yes, it looks like they will be free (or a small charge) to the racers depending on the final cost and the # we make. It’s in the budget!  Thanks Board of Directors!
4.       The club realizes that the racing team and trips are the sources of new members. So they have allowed us to pay for the first 20 racers  $35 per season Crescent racer’s fee again this year.  Make sure you get to the meeting to get on the list to get your fee paid for by the Club.
5.       What to tell new racers about the cost to race…. The cost to join the club is $30 per year.  When you join or re-join you get a $25 gift certificate to Alpine Ski Center. So you net is $5.00 for the season.  If you are one of the first 20 racers the club will pay for your $35 Crescent racer’s fee.  So your net for the racing season is just $5.00!!!! Plus you and all your friends you bring to the race will get a discount on your lift tickets.
6.       Just do a race or two with us!  It’s fun, you meet new skiing friends and it gets you out there on the slopes with a discount!
7.       Bring your spouses, two or three skiing buddies, kids who want to race, etc.  It’s a meeting plus a cookout and a lake/pool party!

Prospective Racers:  Here’s the short version of our league.  There are 16 teams in the Southeast, of which the Charlotte Ski Bees is one team.  The race is both an individual event and a team event.  If there are 200 racers on a day, there will be 20 flights (groups). So only 10 people per flight only based a moving average handicap (like golf).  Which means you’re just racing against 10 people of your same ability NOT all 200.  Winning flight #1 has as many points as winning flight #20!  To you can get a handicap by running one of our races, running a NASTAR race or if you have run a NASTAR race within two years and your time is fast enough you are automatically already qualified.  There are 6 race weekends or 11 races.  5 race weekends in NC (or 10 races).  And the finals at Snowshoe which is a two day 4 run race. The slalom races are on Saturdays and the giant slalom (GS) are on Sundays.  You can either race either day, both days or neither.  Even if you can race just one or two races, join us!!!!  It’s fun, you meet new people, ski with your new friends and it gets you out there! Email or call Mike for more details!

Three of the four Ski Bee Club executive board members are racers and they are all only 31 years old.   Thanks to Margot Payne (Vice President), Trisha Walls (Treasurer), and Craig Derian (Secretary) for your work on the board and getting us into the 21st Century!!!!!  This is GREAT for our club and great for our team!
